Seven Friday Harbor athletes finished first or second in 10 events at the Bi-District Track and Field Championships at King’s High School Saturday, May 19, 2018. Thus a pack of Wolverines — the most in several years — advance to the Class 2B State Track and Field Championships in Cheney May 24-26.
“I’m so damn proud of these guys,” said first-year head coach Shannon Plummer. “They have surpassed and exceeded my expectations and theirs.”
Sophomore Kenny Hallock won the 800-meter run in a personal-record two minutes, 5.80 seconds and placed first in the 1600 in 4:47.55. Sophomore Ryan Schaefer flung the discus a winning 111 feet, three inches and put the shot 38-08 for second-place. Senior Zach Porter qualified with a pair of runner-up finishes in the hurdles — a PR of :46.25 in the 300 and a mark of :19.13 in the 110. Junior Henry Duke came in second in the discus with a 106-07 toss.
La Conner won the boys competition with 207 team points. Crosspoint was second with 118 and Friday Harbor placed third with 71. Seattle Lutheran came in fourth with 68 and Concrete was fifth with 33.
In the girls competition, freshman Emily Vogel won the 1600 in 5:40.14. Illness forced her out of the 800 but she might compete at state in the race since only one other athlete competed at Bi-District. Sophomore Zoe Wegemer finished first in the high jump with a leap of 4-06. Freshman Alex Holman advanced with second-place finishes in the dashes — a personal-best :13.70 in the 100 and a :28.84 in the 200.
The girls team points were: 1. La Conner 184, 2. Crosspoint 78, 3. Concrete 73, 4. Friday Harbor 36.
