Friday Harbor boys roll past Crosspoint, travel to Orcas Island Saturday

Friday Harbor boys basketball team rolled past Crosspoint 74-36 in an elimination contest Thursday, Feb. 9, 2017. With the win over the Warriors (14-7), the Wolverines (12-9) continue in the double-elimination Class 2B District 1/2 Tournament. They travel to Orcas Island (13-2) for a game at 4:30 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 11, 2017.

The Wolverine post players, who averaged several inches taller than the Warriors’ insiders, dominated the boards. “We finally used our size to our advantage,” said Friday Harbor coach Rod Turnbull.
Friday Harbor’s guards also performed well, helping the Wolverines build a 28-16 halftime lead. “Our inside game opened up the outside game,” Turnbull said.
Turnbull commended the Wolverine defenders for shutting down the Warriors’ outside sharpshooters: “We played some good defense. If they (Crosspoint’s guards) get going on those threes, it’s a whole different thing.”
John Gustafson paced the Wolverines with 15 points. Isaac Mayer pitched in 13 and Rio Black pumped in 12. The other Friday Harbor scorers were: Marshall Clark 8, Andy Stromberg 7, Joe Stewart 6, Eli Cooper-West 4, Bailey Hay 3, Simon Vincent 2, Chase Wilson 2 and Lucas Chevalier 2.
Jackson Kimmel led the Warriors with 15. Crosspoint’s other scorers were: Grant Baker 8, Jared Cattle 6, Nathan Taylor 3, Aydan Laurion 2 and Alex Weirth 2.
