The signs - Build Bridges Not Walls, Every Species Matters, Smash the Patriarchy, Strong Girls Strong World, Orcas Not Oil and many more - reflected the variety of concerns that drove an estimated 1,500 women, men and children to walk in the Women's March in Friday Harbor. Approximately 200 people from Shaw, Lopez and Orcas Islands arrived on the interisland ferry to join the event. Marchers of all ages joined together in peaceful protest. The election of Donald Trump has unnerved and frightened millions on U.S. citizens and people from other nations. According to the Washington Post millions worldwide participated in marches including Seattle, Washington, D.C., Barcelona and Prague.

Organizers of the Friday Harbor March said the mission is to spread love, hope, community, empowerment, and awareness; to stand in solidarity with our partners and children for the protection of our rights, our safety, our health, our environment, and our families. Our women-led movement recognizes that our vibrant and diverse communities are the strength of our county and our country. The Women’s March on Friday Harbor hopes to continue to strengthen the sense of community and support that already exists within our island home; some businesses are even closing during the march so their employees can participate. While we call it a women’s march, all are invited and encouraged to participate, regardless of gender identity, ethnicity, age, abilities, political affiliation, religion, or sexual orientation. This is truly an event for everyone. Because women’s rights are human rights.

In all of my years here (30 or so) I have never seen such a large group of people together at one time. It was amazing and made my sad soul feel like there is a chance for truth and sanity to bubble to the top. At this point I wish that we could have a 'do over' election. Give them two weeks to hold another one and nobody can spend a penny on their campaign. No electoral college, just flat out one vote for one registered voter. That's how it should be anyway.
