A generous crowd of party-goers celebrated at San Juan Community Theatre's annual Holiday Festival Saturday, December 2 in Friday Harbor. They perused the numerous items in the silent auction ranging from art work to Seattle Mariners tickets. After wine and appetizers, attendees moved into the Whittier Theatre and participated in the 20-item live auction.
Auctioneer Jay Fiske and SJCT's Director of Finance and Development Julie Hanks presented the items ranging from the perennial favorite load of gravel to stays in Taos, Oregon Coast, British Columbia.
Taking a break from auctioning items, Fiske and Hanks asked the audience to help fund next year's production costs. In minutes, $51,000 was raised. Then David Honeywell added an additional $4000 to raise the total to $55,000.
For the auction item "Theatre Arts for All" just short of $6,000 was raised for scholarships for participation in adult or youth educational programs.
As a taste of what the programs create, SJCT's Keynotes Youth Chorus presented the song "Be Our Guest" from 2018's summer musical. Auditions for Beauty and the Beast will be held in January.
Other highlights of the night including a musical number by Lisa Moretti from Chicago, "news" highlights from the field by Promotion Director Jan Bollwinkel, raffle drawing by SJCT Artistic Director Bobby Ryan and a giant cookie, a sumptuous dinner by Coho, and dancing to holiday tunes.
At the end of the night, $108,000 was raised.
