March 27-31: Town of Friday Harbor Spring Clean Up

Town will host Spring Cleanup March 27 - 31 The Town of Friday Harbor is offering its in-town, residential customers a one-time-only curbside pickup of items that are too large or too heavy for their refuse cans the week of Monday, March 27 through Friday, March 31.

Pickup at non-commercial, single family and up to four-unit multi-family residences will take place on their regular refuse collection day.

“The Town appreciates our citizens’ efforts to maintain their homes and properties,” said Town Administrator Denice Kulseth. “This is our opportunity to thank them and encourage neighborhood cleanups.”

This is the seventh year the Town has offered a spring cleanup service free of charge to its in-town customers.

Specific rules apply regarding the volume and type of items that will be accepted including that items must fit in a standard pickup truck bed and weigh no more than 60 pounds. This pickup is for non-hazardous, non-liquid items such as large toys and scrap metal, mattresses, carpet, and unusable furniture.

It is not for items such as yard or household waste, building materials, electronics, or large appliances, or for items that can be reused or recycled. Additional rules apply, and there will be no exceptions.

Customers should review the information included with their monthly billing statement and posted on the Town website at www.fridayharbor.org or call Town Hall at (360) 378-2810.

The Town reserves the right to decline pickup of any items. Unaccepted items must be removed by the customer within two days of their refuse pickup day. Unremoved items and anything left in front of empty homes will be investigated by Code Enforcement as illegal dumping.

This service is solely to assist existing Town refuse customers, and no items may be brought to or left in Town.

Regular refuse and yard waste pickups will occur separately that week as usual. Customers are to set these cans apart from their large refuse pickup pile.

What do I need to do?

1. Make sure your items are acceptable (see list on back). There are no exceptions to the list.

2. Have your items at the curb by 6 a.m. on your regularly scheduled garbage pickup day the week of March 27 - 31. Junk truck will NOT return if you miss the pickup.

3. Your regular refuse will be picked up separately as usual that day. Be sure to set these cans apart from your junk pile!

“How much junk can I dump?”

Each household may set out the equivalent of one standard pickup truck load (approx. 60 cu. ft.). Two people must be able to lift each of your items (60 lb. maximum).

Any other rules?

• Do not place items at the curb more than 2 days prior to pick up.

• Do not allow your items to block traffic, driveways, sidewalks, fire hydrants, or storm drains.

• Break down large items so they will fit within a standard pickup truck bed.

• Do not use containers that you want to keep; everything will be picked up.

• Items placed in front of empty houses will be treated as illegal dumping and will be investigated by Code Enforcement.

• The Town reserves the right to refuse items. If items are not acceptable for pickup, you must remove them from the curb within 2 days of the scheduled pickup.

What WON’T be accepted?

No bagged items or sealed boxes.

Please do not put out items that can be donated or recycled. Unacceptable items include, but are not limited to, the following:

 Household trash, food waste, or recyclables.

 Yard waste

 Liquid waste including paints, solvents, oils, fuels, antifreeze, household or commercial chemicals

 Flammable, explosive, or hazardous materials including fluorescent lights, aerosol cans, batteries, pesticides, fertilizer, asbestos, pressurized gas cylinders, propane tanks, ammunition

 Electronics including TVs, computers, monitors, printers, cell phones, stereos

 Large appliances including washers, dryers, dishwashers, compactors, refrigerators, and any containing Freon

 Building materials and plumbing fixtures including sheds, fences, wood/plywood, brick, concrete, asphalt, pipe, roofing material, doors, windows, railroad ties, bathtubs, sinks, toilets, hot tubs, water heaters

 Commercial construction waste

 Small scrap metal

 Metal drums

 Tires

 Boats

 Exceptionally heavy or bulky items including couches, hideaway sofa beds, pianos

What WILL be accepted?

 Mattresses and box springs (queen size and smaller)

 Small household appliances (may not include Freon)

 Furniture smaller than a sofa or couch (able to fit in a truck bed)

 Barbecue grills (propane tanks removed)

 Lawnmowers (fuel/fluids drained)

 Large toys and swing sets (broken down to fit in truck bed)

 Carpet (10 square yards total; rolled and tied)

 Large scrap metal: Must be too big to fit in garbage can. Must be broken down so could fit in pickup truck. Drain oil, gas, and other fluids, and remove tires.

 Misc. items too heavy for curbside can

At this time, the Town is only able to offer GOT JUNK pickup to our customers who reside within town limits on residential properties that are single-family or up to 4-unit multi-family.
