New Buck Bay Bridge open

2-210The new 43-foot Buck Bay Bridge on Orcas Island, which replaced a roadway fill where Cascade Creek flowed through two culverts, opened at 4:35 p.m. September 28. An official bridge opening and celebration is set for noon Thursday, October 20 with state and county officials and the public.

When the culverts were overwhelmed by the stream's flow, the roadway was flooded and damaged. The culverts were also an obstacle to fish passage. The project, funded by a $472,000 state Salmon Recovery Funding Board grant and county matching funds, created a new 18-foot wide stream channel.

Razz Construction of Bellingham won the construction contract in April of this year and used several local suppliers and sub-contractors. Final work on vegetation restoration will be complete by October 21.

For more project information, contact Dan Vekved at Public Works 370-0504 or danv@sjcpublicworks.org.
