Diesel/oil spill off Sunset Point west side of San Juan Island

The Aleutian Isle, a 49-foot fishing vessel sank in 100 feet of water just west of Sunset Point, San Juan Island with an estimated 2600 gal diesel/oil onboard at approximately 10 a.m. Saturday, August 13, 2022. All crew were rescued by good Samaritan. The US Coast Guard,  NOAA, and other partner agencies are responding.

The Coast Guard is coordinating with Sound Watch and NOAA to monitor the location of the Southern Resident Killer Whales in the vicinity of the San Juan Islands. While there are not any whales currently in the area, the agencies are prepared to deploy authorized deterrents. These measures will keep whales clear of the impacted area under the guidance and oversight of NOAA officials.
