October 11: Local Planetary Scientists explain Annular Eclipses at San Juan Island Library

What's an Annular Eclipse, and how is it different from others? Join Vicky Hipkin and John Rummel, island residents and planetary scientists, as they bring us to the intersection of the science and history surrounding these phenomena from 7 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, October 11, 2023 in San Juan Island library. They will provide an in-depth demonstration and Q&A session to answer your burning questions before the big event on October 14.

Vicky Hipkin and John Rummel have spent many years working for the Canadian Space Agency and NASA respectively, and have been involved in planetary missions and science programs and policy.

Vicky has been an occasional presenter for the CSA, including a coast to coast tour of Canadian museums and planetaria.

John is known for the creative use of popular cartoons to illustrate serious points in his scientific talks. He is also the 2023 Drake Award recipient for outstanding contributions to astrobiology and the search for extraterrestrial life.

They will be joined by their children, Tristan, Grade 5 at FHES, and Hannah, a preschooler at St David’s Day School, to assist in a demonstration.
